The Seminars

The series consists of six research seminars, 3 workshops and a conference.

All the research seminars are open to all, but places are limited so if you would like to attend please contact us to reserve a place ASAP. A minimum of two places will be allocated to PhD students at each seminar. PowerPoint presentations will be made available on the series website, subject to the consent of the authors.

Seminars are free, but registration is required.  Please register via Eventbrite, a link will be made available for each of the seminars..

Seminar 1: Advance decision-making – the context, the promise and the pitfalls (Leeds, 24 March 2015). This seminar considered the contexts in which advance decision-making takes place, considering both advance decisions relating to end of life treatment and psychiatric advance decisions; the ethical principles implicated in advance decision-making and the practical context within which advance decisions fall to be implemented.

Seminar 2: Legal and professional responses to advance decision-making I (Leeds, 14 September 2015). This seminar considered the regulation of advance decisions and professional responses thereto, together with a consideration of the impact of physician attitudes upon the implementation of advance decisions.

Seminar 3: Legal and professional responses to advance decision-making II (Leeds, 14 - 15 December 2015). This extended (1.5 day) seminar considered the regulation of advance decisions and professional responses thereto, together with a consideration of the impact of physician attitudes upon the implementation of advance decisions.

Seminar 4: Preparing and implementing advance decisions (1 September 2016). This seminar focussed upon how advance decisions capable of implementation can be created and their role within the advance care planning context.

Seminar 5: Advance decisions and dementia (2 September 2016). This seminar focussed upon dementia, an area where advance decisions are considered to be particularly relevant, but which has been particularly contentious due to concerns relating to personhood.

Seminar 6: Advance decision-making: the European dimension (Leeds, 17 January 2017): This seminar focussed upon the way in which advance decisions might be promoted, and regulated, at a European level.
